Holiday Message from IAMSE

Dear IAMSE Members:

2009 will not be remembered as a great year for the economy, but I am very proud of how IAMSE continued to move forward, offering its members and the medical education community a wealth of resources and new experiences. Our first European meeting in Leiden was memorable, providing both a chance for our members to travel and network outside North America and an demonstration of the mission implicit in the first letter of IAMSE. Its financial success came from the passion and loyalty of many members traveling without expected funding, and from exceptional organizing and European outreach from Peter de Jong and his committee. I feel that can serve as a model for future meetings outside North America, including 2012 in Izmir. Our Webcast Audio Seminars continue to reach new audiences, and the recent series set attendance records. And the Board has opened a search for a compensated editor for a renamed IAMSE journal: Medical Science Educator: The Journal of the International Association of Medical Science Educators. We will enjoy hearing ideas from the membership as to how to best continue the fine scholarship of our sponsored journal in the face of increasing competition in the education scholarship arena. Finally, the members approved a reworking of our committee structure that should reduce silos and promote collaboration. These innovations in the face of economic downturn speak well for our organization and the creativity of its members.

Foremost, I wish to thank you, one of our committed and talented IAMSE members. Collectively you further the aims and excellence of our organization and make us a leader in faculty development for the health sciences. In an era of efficiency, financial bottom lines, and reduced education hours, IAMSE remains the scientific conscience of our professions, working to ensure that professionals know the how and why of their work, not just the what (and the cost). I wish all of you a wonderful holiday season and look forward to a terrific year for our organization in 2010.

Dear IAMSE Member:

At the 2007 annual meeting, IAMSE issued its first Master Teacher Award and Medical Education Scholarship Award. We would now like your nominees for the 2010 awards, which will be presented at the annual meeting in New Orleans.
The Master Teacher Award honors an IAMSE member who, over the course of many years, has consistently demonstrated extraordinary excellence in teaching, both at his/her institution and within IAMSE. Any teaching can be recognized, but nominations of members who have been active teachers at the annual IAMSE meetings or web seminars are particularly encouraged.

The Medical Education Scholarship Award recognizes an IAMSE member who has a distinguished record of educational scholarship, including educational research and/or dissemination of excellent and scholarly approaches to teaching and education. A Distributed Community Instructional Model of Medical Education

The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) was created by the Government of Ontario with a specific social accountability mandate "To provide innovative undergraduate and post graduate medical education programs to met the needs of the students and the health care needs of the underserved population of Northern Ontario".

As the first new fully accredited medical school in Canada in over 30 years, the original class of fifty-five students graduated in May of 2009. This presentation describes the curriculum experiences created to meet the needs of the students and people of Northern Ontario and the processes involved in an area of 1,000,000 square kilometers challenged by economic, geographic and political factors.

Objectives:

* Describe the "engagement" strategies employed to obtain consensus on curricular direction for NOSM

* Identify innovative features of the NOSM curriculum in contrast with "traditional" curricular models

* Describe the integrative nature of the NOSM curriculum with a focus on the medical or explanatory sciences

* Identify the nature of Governance in a medical school as "not-for-profit corporation" with two university partners

* Define the impact of 70 partner communities on communication, construction and institutional culture.

IAMSE Web Seminar Series Continues .....

Thursday, October 1, 2009

Red Hot Chili Pepper - Clinical and Basic Science Integration at Paul L. Foster School of Medicine

We read the journals and listen to the seminars about exciting new paths for medical education in the 21st century, and then face the reality of time, money, space and intransigence. What would I do if I had a clean slate? This seminar series will provide an overview of contemporary possibilities and then focus on some of the ways five new medical schools from around the world faced the opportunities and challenges of developing their curricula. They incorporated the latest approaches in simulation and virtual-patient teaching, integrative learning, early and continued patient contact, and even restructured the way faculty are appointed to departments. Each medical school has its own approaches and limitations yet there are common goals from which we can all learn. This webcast series will highlight new educational approaches in medical education and practical experiences for their implementation.

Introduction: Educating the Physician of the 21st Century: Providing the Slate for Medical Schools to Write On

IAMSE Web Seminar - If I Had a Clean Slate ... New Medical School Curricula

Date: September 17, 2009
Time: 1:00 - 2:00 pm ET
Registration: http://iamse.org/development/2009/was_registration.htm

Introduction: Educating the Physician of the 21st Century: Providing the Slate for Medical Schools to Write On

Almost 100 years ago, a teacher named Abraham Flexner was commissioned by the Carnegie Foundation to review medical education in the United States and Canada and using a clean slate, to write the future of medical education. The slate that Mr. Flexner created has influenced medical education for the past century. Over the past 100 years, many elements of the slate have gotten smeared and some have disappeared altogether. It is now time to wipe the slate clean and create a new picture of medical education. During this session we will imagine that we now have the same opportunity that Flexner had (but without funding from the Carnegie Foundation) - to develop the approach to medical education in the 21st century. What will we include on the slate; what should we include on the slate? What does medical education in the 21st century look like? What would we retain from Flexner's slate? What would we erase and add to the slate? What questions was Flexner wrestling with at the beginning of the 20th century and how have those questions changed, or remained the same, at the beginning of the 21st century? We will consider a brief history of medical education - how we got where we are today - and then explore the opportunities and the challenges facing medical educators as we develop a slate for medical education in the 21st century.

Presenter: M. Brownell Anderson, M.Ed.

IAMSE Board of Director Election Results

Dear IAMSE members:

Thanks to all of you who voted in the recent IAMSE elections. Current Board members William Jeffries, Floyd Knoop, Susan Pasquale, and Ferhan Sagin were reelected to new three year terms, and you elected one Board newcomer--Amy Wilson-Delfosse from Case Western in Cleveland who has recently taken on leadership of our Membership Committee. Welcome, Amy, and congratulations to all who were elected. I also want to express my appreciation for the other candidates who agreed to be nominated for this important task, and hope they will try again. I hope that many of you will seek to become more involved in IAMSE leadership in the future. The best way to do so is to become visible and involved. Present a seminar at the annual meeting or volunteer for committee membership, and while you are there, take on a special project. We are a dynamic and inclusive organization that rewards involvement! I can speak from personal experience here, as I did not attend my first IAMSE meeting until 2002, but am now President of the organization.

The revisions to our Bylaws were approved with 97% approval. I will write you with more details on the implications for our committee structure soon, but the Board hopes that one important sequela will be improved integration of our various educational activities, so that a theme presented at our annual meeting might be followed up later in the year with a Web Seminar or JIAMSE feature article.

We are doing very well in registrations for our first European annual meeting this June-July in Leiden. The over 220 preregistrants are a record for annual meetings, and we are very appreciative to those of you who are making the sacrifice to attend a distant meeting in hard economic times. This should be an exciting chance to renew old connections and meet new educators in a lovely historic city. So start studying Dutch (see the IAMSE website for help), reading your maps, reviewing the works of Rembrandt and preparing for a wonderful cultural experience. I look forward to greeting you there!

MedEdPORTAL Relaunch!

On April 7, 2009, the AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) launched the MedEdPORTAL 2.0 repository and Web site (www.aamc.org/mededportal). MedEdPORTAL is a free medical and dental publication service that promotes access to high-quality, peer-reviewed educational teaching and assessment resources online.

While the new MedEdPORTAL Web site may look familiar, the back-end of the system has undergone dramatic improvements. The Web site is now fully integrated with a powerful content and digital asset management system to host resources online. Through major enhancements, the new MedEdPORTAL site provides you with the ease of downloading resources directly from the Web site; allowing 90 percent of MedEdPORTAL’s 1,300 publications to be available for download or by directly linking to external Web sites. The remaining 10 percent of publications will continue to be disseminated by MedEdPORTAL staff due to size limitations or because those publications are assessment tools in which authors have requested protection through a human firewall.

The new MedEdPORTAL Web site also features a robust search engine that will allow you to search for published resources through a greater number of metrics (e.g., the “Find” function searches the published abstract in addition to any text included in the published resource files, such as PowerPoints, Word documents, PDFs, etc.). In addition, the new Web site collects a variety of end-user data that can be used by authors to demonstrate the particular impact and utilization of their published materials.

We encourage you to share this information with your colleagues and to disseminate it to your respective listserves. Please visit the new MedEdPORTAL 2.0 repository Web site at www.aamc.org/mededportal.
