18th Annual IAMSE Meeting Highlights

Dear Colleagues,

The 18th annual International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE) meeting will be held at the Sheraton Music City Hotel in Nashville Tennessee from June 7 10th, 2014. This annual event brings together medical educators from around the world to attend and participate in preconference workshops, plenary sessions, focus sessions, poster sessions, eDemos, panel discussions and social activities. Our attendees include faculty, staff and administrators from Allopathic & Osteopathic Schools of Medicine, Schools of Nursing, Veterinary Schools, Schools of Allied Health, Schools of Public Health and Schools of Alternative Medicine.

The following plenary sessions have been confirmed for this meeting:

• David Pederson, M.Ed. "Reframing Undergraduate Medical Education-Leveraging Emerging Clinical Technologies to Prepare Tomorrow's Physicians. David's session will include the use of simulation, ultrasound and robotic surgery to engage tomorrow's physicians.
• Linda Norman, DSN, RN, FAAN "Inter-Professional Education (IPE): Synchronous, Asynchronous, Clinical Practice, Simulation Across Disciplines, Across Universities". Linda's session is an interesting twist on Interprofessional Education that not only encompasses IPE within Vanderbilt university but this novel program also promotes IPE between universities. 
• Karen Cornell, D.V.M. "Providing Effective Feedback to Students and Colleagues". Karen's session will stress the importance of good communication skills and how to handle difficult conversations. 
• Nikki Woods, Ph.D. "Cognitive Connections: Making the Case for Integrated Basic Sciences" This session will focus on how physicians utilize foundational sciences to assist in their clinical reasoning and decision making. 
• We will end our meeting with an interactive session led by John Pelley, Ph.D. John's session entitled "Making Active Learning Effective" will address new ways to engage students outside of didacticlectures. 

Preconference workshops are also available for all attendees for a additional nominal fee and include; the use of simulation in medical curricula (including IPE), teaching innovations in the dissection lab, publishing scholarly work, continuous integration of basic science and clinical medicine, ultrasound teaching in undergraduate medical curricula, making active learning effective and applying adult learning theories to education in the health sciences.

Times are Changing: Evolution and Revolution in Medical Education: 2013 Edition Developing Teaching Tools and Measuring Learning Progress in New Ways

Learning in context, clinical decision making, self-directed learning, asynchronous teaching, etc., etc. We've heard the buzz words of new approaches to clinically-oriented teaching and testing, but how do we as instructors learn to apply these skills? This webcast series will provide how-to sessions on some of these approaches. Developing focused clinical cases for teaching may not be intuitive for non-clinicians or clinicians. Our first session will introduce and illustrate how basic and clinical principles of disease and treatment can be constructed into clinical cases for lectures, PBL /TBL sessions and NBME-style exam questions.

There are defined principles and useful resources to employ, and pitfalls to avoid, that will help us all with this skill. How about testing? Are we confident that students can retain and apply knowledge and skills in an increasingly sophisticated manner? A subsequent session will discuss progress testing in which repeated measures of standards can document student progress and highlight remaining deficiencies over time. Script concordance is another new approach by which students must make value judgments of clinical data and apply new information to the next decision step. This approach helps mold and measure the everyday decision pathway that clinicians must travel.

Finally, there are new approaches to teaching and learning that are more difficult to monitor and measure. Curricula are mandated to have active and independent learning time. What does this really mean? Is it "efficient"? Our last two sessions will focus on independent learning. We will discuss effective use, pros and cons, and best approaches to using learning time as well as the use of social media in teaching. This final presentation of the series will explore roles, ethics, age differences, documentation, and effectiveness as challenges and opportunities with this approach to medical education.

IAMSE Silent Auction Outcome

The IAMSE Development Committee is very pleased to announce that this year's Silent Auction at the IAMSE meeting in Scotland was able to infuse over $3000.00 into our organization's Annual Conference Scholarship/Travel Award fund!

As you are aware, the funds gathered through the Silent Auction each year are used to support competitive awards to medical education scholars; these awards are directed toward attendance and travel costs at our annual conference.

This year's IAMSE Travel Award winners were Ivan Sisa and Zainab Zahra. The funds allowed the participents to present their work and at the Scotland meeting.

This award provides for the ability of IAMSE to wisely invest in the professional promise of our novice medical education scholars and engage them in the mission and goals of our organization.

The Call for Proposals for Workshop & Focus sessions for the 2014 IAMSE meeting is NOW OPEN!

Meeting Dates:  June 7-10, 2014

The IAMSE meeting offers opportunities for faculty development and networking bringing together medical sciences and medical education across the continuum of health care education.  Plenary topics for the 2014 meeting will include the use of simulation in medical education, giving effective and meaningful feedback, interprofessional education and the promotion of active learning in the classroom. 

The 2014 Program Committee is now accepting proposals for workshop and focus session topics.  To request a copy of the proposal submission form, contact Julie@iamse.org.  Proposals are to be emailed to Julie@iamse.org no later than September 30th, 2013.
